Korean Dramas as Something Mainstream?

Once you started watching korean dramas, there is no turning back anymore. Korean drama franchise in the Philippines began in 2003, with GMA purchasing the license to air Bright Girl in their network. It was followed by Autumn in My Heart, Lovers in Paris and My Girl. The trend continues because up until now, the local TV stations here in the Philippines still does acquire the right to air a certain kdrama. Airing of kdramas here in the Philippines is different as they get people to dub the kdramas rather than placing English or Filipino subtitles. Because kdramas became a hit in the Philippines, local TV stations try to have a remake of the drama, having Filipino actors to portray the roles. This is where it has gone wrong as the directors try to exaggerate scenes as they try to be in par with the original drama.

People think that kdramas are all about love, but no. Most of them give us life lessons which we usually just tend to ignore as we focus more on the love story between the charcters. This is what leads other people to brand kdramas as petty series who only knows how to make "pakilig". As kdramas become popular again when Descendants of the Sun was aired because of the unusual plot of a soldier and a doctor falling in love, many people are now in search of kdramas whose plots are more of the romantic comedy. Most people only watch kdramas when they know that the lead actors who will be casted are famous. They tend to ignore the plot as all they care are "visuals". This is the reason why there area lot of hidden gems in kdrama -- the gems that people exchange just because they are into the visuals of the leads rather than the plot itself.
